Website management time

Post by Neververy4 »

I have a lot of pics of my Dragon, Never the Dragon. And while most ARE on my website, not all are there, and they're also not consistent. And with my Fursona's 15th birthday coming up in 7 days, I'd like to fix this
Image
Thankfully, I was smart when I started this website, and kept with a consistent naming scheme: ArtistName01.file, and multiple edits being ArtistName01A.file :floppy5: This has made it easy to search for images, however it still has some flaws. For starters, if I don't remember the file extension, then I have to sit there hunting through them all just to figure out which one I need. And because my Website hosting service uses a Linux backend, file.png is different from File.png which is different from File.PNG; file names are case sensitive :eye_roll: Pheel05.JPG cannot be found by making the .jpg lowercase :cringe: SO! The first thing I need to do is rename everything properly, and make everything the same file extension :floppy3: .jpeg is best for website design, however I use this as an archive as well, so I'll be keeping them all as .png

The second thing I need to do, once I update all my gallery pages to reflect the name/extension changes, is fix where I store the web-safe compressed images. When you view that gallery, all the images you actually see are tho originals cut down to 25%; 1/4th of their full size. This helps page loading times by 400%. Currently, those images are stored in the same folder, meaning that when I go to look for a specific image, I'm also hunting through all the compressed ones as well. An annoyance in terms of archival purposes. So while I'm renaming all those images on the gallery page, I'll have to also redirect every single "Thumbnail" image to a new folder.

And then, once I'm done with Never, I have to do all this again with the other three :pensive: :cringe:

Anyways, I'm posting this as motivation to get this tedious work done :cringe: I don't like tedious renaming, but I've been slacking for years on this, and It's only gonna get worse :pensive:

So update, I got every Never image both named properly, as well as set to all be .png (lowercase). The naming conventions are now Artistname01A.png; inly the first letter, as well as the letters for multiples, are capitalized. This is good! It means that as long as I rememeber the artist’s name, I can pull up any image without having to remember every URL. all images are img.neververy4.com, with Never’s being in /neverthedragon/, followed by Artistname01A.png

However. I still have to rename the other 3 character’s images, as well as finish all the webpages that access these images. So I’m not done yet!

I forgot about this until today. It took less than 5 minutes to do all three. One I didn't even have to touch. :\ Those three put together make up about 1/8th of what Never the Dragon has.

In other news, I have changed what I am doing with my website. I am re-coding every single page to have a better, cleaner, and neater layout, AND I am adding multi language support. In the past week I got all of my www. pages finished, and I'm currently working on my fursona. pages. You can see the main www. pages here, however now all the links currently work. Same with my Fursona's home page, it's finished but many links are broken until I get the next pages done.

This will mean that all of my website links will break :pensive: img.neververy4.com and this forum will be fine, but www., fursona., art., and code. will all break as I'll be adding in a /en_US/ into the middle of the URL. A pain I'm ready to tackle as I slowly find all the various links across the internet, but a tackle nonetheless.
